The Urgent Need to Protect Ecuador’s Pacific Forest
The Pacific Forest of Ecuador is disappearing at an alarming rate. Once a thriving ecosystem spanning vast regions, 98% of this tropical forest has already been lost—one of the highest rates of deforestation on the planet.
What remains is home to some of the world’s most unique and endangered species, including the Critically Endangered Ecuadorian White-Fronted Capuchin Monkey and countless rare birds and plants.
At the heart of this struggle is the Jama-Coaque Reserve (JCR), a protected 1,500-acre sanctuary dedicated to saving this irreplaceable ecosystem. But the forest around it is shrinking daily, putting wildlife and biodiversity at even greater risk.
We have a chance to change that—by expanding the reserve and creating a long-term solution to protect this forest forever.
The Solution: Expanding the Reserve & Restoring the Land
To truly protect the Pacific Forest, we must do more than just defend what’s left. We must actively expand and restore it. That’s why Third Millennium Alliance (TMA) is working to purchase and protect 2,200 additional acres over the next five years.
By connecting multiple forest fragments, we will create the largest nature preserve in the region, ensuring safe migration paths for wildlife and stopping deforestation in its tracks.
But conservation isn’t just about setting land aside. It’s also about providing sustainable solutions for local communities—because without economic alternatives, deforestation will continue. That’s why TMA is also establishing a 10,000-acre agroforestry buffer zone around the reserve.
This zone will help regenerate deforested land while creating income for local farmers through shade-grown heirloom cacao and other regenerative agroforestry crops. Learn more about our agroforestry approach here: https://www.tma.earth/our-work/regenerative-agriculture.
How You Can Make a Difference
Expanding and protecting the Jama-Coaque Reserve is only possible with your support. Every acre we save helps prevent deforestation, protects endangered species, and restores vital ecosystems.
Here’s how your donation makes an impact:
🌳 $700 = Protects 1 acre forever (land purchase)
🦜 $125 = Protects 1 acre for 1 year (monitoring & conservation)
Every dollar goes directly toward purchasing land, enforcing protections, and supporting sustainable solutions for local communities. Make your contribution here: https://www.tma.earth/donate.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
🌍 Biodiversity Hotspot: The Pacific Forest is part of the Tumbes-Chocó-Magdalena Biodiversity Hotspot, one of the most species-rich regions on Earth. Protecting it safeguards countless plant and animal species found nowhere else.
🔥 Fighting Climate Change: Forests are one of the most powerful tools in combating climate change, capturing and storing carbon that would otherwise enter the atmosphere. Protecting this forest means reducing greenhouse gases and preserving a stable climate.
💚 A Sustainable Future: Deforestation is often driven by economic necessity. By investing in regenerative agroforestry, we provide local communities with an income while keeping forests intact.
