The Mission of Save The Manatee Club is to help protect manatee populations around the world for future generations.
Throughout history manatees have struggled to thrive alongside mankind. According to the Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), all three manatee species are listed as vulnerable and endangered.
The Save The Manatee Club is working hard to prevent this from happening, their goals are to:
- Help preserve and protect the habitats that manatees dwell in and call home to support their population.
- Help defend manatees against injuries, harassment and other trauma inflicted and caused by humans.
- Work with legislation to ensure regulations are in place for their protection.
- Demand accountability from policy makers.
- Support the most promising and effective conservation efforts.
- Take legal action when needed.
- Increase education and pulblic awareness.
- Fund research to learn more about the species.
- Help support and assist with the rescue and rehabilitation and overall wellbeing of manatees throughout the West Africa, South America and the Caribbean.
One of the most magnificent creatures on the planet, the manatee is on the brink of collapse, and unfortunately it’s caused by humans.
The good news is that mankind can just as easily save and protect this species if we want to.
Manatees are on the international watch list for endangered animals, by both the World Conservation Union, and Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commision.
Since record keeping began back in the early 70’s, over 34% of manatee deaths were caused by boat propeller and watercraft collisions.
With education, community outreach, and a deeper understanding we can all start to offer these beings a newfound respect and space within their habitat that can lead to a bountiful recovery.
The Save The Manatee Club nonprofit was established in 1981 by singer and songwriter Jimmy Buffet, and Bob Graham who was the former U.S Senator for the state of Florida.
