The Florida Springs Council Is Fighting For Florida’s Water.

The Florida Springs Council is a 501(c)3 non-profit coalition, composed of 53 member organizations that are all working to restore, preserve and protect our Springs and the Floridan Aquifer for future generations.

The Florida Springs Council and partner organizations are 100% committed to doing whatever is necessary; they work tirelessly with Florida state Legislators, local governments, and county commissioners to reverse the destruction of North Florida’s Springs and waters and to ensure that Florida’s Springs get the protection and funding needed before Florida’s environmental crisis worsens”.

A message from Ryan Smart the Councils first director; “My primary goal as the Florida Springs Council’s first executive director is to build the power, influence, and resources of springs advocates across our state, I strive to put those who pollute and abuse our precious springs on notice”.

Your support will help the Florida Springs Council with the following;

Create a Springs legal fund to ensure the rightful protection of the Florida Springs and Floridan Aquifer.

  • Create a Springs legal fund to ensure the rightful protection of the Florida Springs and Floridan Aquifer.
  • Challenging the state to put a stop to the destructive, ecocidal practice of spraying hundreds of square miles of     Florida’s pristine wetlands with dozens of different herbicides at a cost of over $100 million just since 2013.
  • Continue holding the states elected officials accountable for crimes against nature.
  • Educate homeowners, ranchers, and farmers about the astronomical importance of organic lawn practices to prevent nitrogen runoff which ends up in our aquifer and leads to algae blooms that are toxic to sensitive human and aquatic life.
  • Working to restore and protect Florida’s 1,000 Artisan Springs to historical spring flows by setting the MFL and pushing for less water extraction and pumping permits.
  • Educate Florida’s residents about the fundamental importance of water conservation along with simple ways to preserve the Floridan aquifer so that future generations can also enjoy Florida’s waters.
  • Implementing a tax on commercial water bottling operations.

URGENT ACTION ALERT

Following a decade of rapid water quality deterioration, Florida waters need strong, enforceable water quality regulations now. Unfortunately, Senate Bill 712, touted as “the Clean Waterways Act,” will not adequately protect and restore Florida’s water resources, further endangering our environment, economy, and public health.

To this end, Waterkeepers Florida, Sierra Club Florida and the Florida Springs Council have submitted amendments that incorporate common sense, practical approaches to ensure that SB 712 meets our collective goal of protecting and restoring Florida’s springs, river, lakes, coasts, wetlands, and estuaries.

These amendments include:

  • Adding requirements to ensure that water quality goals are actually being met.
  • Providing funding for remediation projects for agricultural pollution.
  • Regulating the land disposal of sewage sludge (biosolids) to protect sensitive watersheds.
  • Strengthening water quality protections from stormwater systems.

Please contact Senator Debbie Mayfield, the sponsor of SB 712, and urge her to amend SB 712 to include these vital, commonsense amendments. We are asking you to take a moment to urge the bill’s sponsor, Senator Mayfield, to amend SB 712 to include these vital, commonsense amendments.
