Room for Nature

Help nature thrive where we live.

Room for Nature encourages people to bring native plants and wildlife habitat into gardens, schoolyards, workplaces, and community spaces.

Through stories, learning resources, and connections to existing efforts, we help you understand what your space could support—and take a practical step toward making it happen.

Start with one place

Our vision

Everyday places. More room for other life.

We want to help people make familiar places more welcoming to native plants and wildlife—and build a deeper relationship with the life around them.

Around our homes

A garden, yard, balcony, or shared outdoor space. Begin by understanding the place and exploring what thoughtful habitat care could look like there.

Where we learn and gather

A school, congregation, community center, or neighborhood space. Bring the people who use and maintain it into the conversation from the beginning.

Where we work

Business grounds and workplace landscapes. Explore possibilities with the people responsible for the land, including the resources and continuing care a change would need.

A world to discover

Look beyond the planting.

What lives here? What returns through the seasons? What can the people who know this place teach us?

Our developing coverage will explore native plants, pollinators, wildlife habitat, and coexistence through the lives, places, and people behind them. We will follow the learning and continuing care—not just the photograph from planting day.

NFE’s contribution is independent research, storytelling, education, and outreach: bringing useful work into view and connecting readers with meaningful ways to participate.

Your next step

Make one place better for wildlife.

Start with a corner of your yard, a garden, a schoolyard, a workplace, or a shared outdoor space. Choose one practical change that brings native plants and wildlife habitat into the picture. You do not need to own land or take on the whole space to help.

  1. Pick your place

Choose somewhere you can care for or help improve. It might be a garden bed at home, a planting outside your workplace, or a community space where you volunteer.

  2. Make a plan together

Talk with the people responsible for the space. Identify one opportunity—adding a native planting, improving an existing bed, or joining habitat work already underway—and agree on who will help care for it.

  3. Take one concrete step

Choose an action you can carry through: find locally appropriate native plants, organize a planting day, volunteer with an existing effort, or help secure plants and supplies. Make it specific and set a date.

  4. Keep it growing

Plan for care beyond the first day. Share the work, return through the seasons, and use what you learn to guide the next improvement.

Start small. Make a change. Keep caring for it.

Stories worth discovering

Help bring a living place into view.

Do you know a garden, schoolyard, workplace, community initiative, or person whose experience others could learn from?

Introduce the place, the people involved, and what makes the story worth understanding. We are interested in lessons, challenges, and continuing care as well as beautiful results.
